I must admit that I find the mumbo-jumbo, incense waving, bishops mitres and vestments, etc. offputting; but the Church to my mind has many redeeming qualities, especially in the realms of charity, hospitals, schools, etc.

Does Roman Catholicism Teach The "Truth"?
by minimus inout of all mainstream religions, roman catholicism seems to be the most cultic to me, even more so than jehovah's witnesses in certain ways.. the belief in transubstantiation , i think that's how it's spelled, is weird!
the attire of the clergy is satanic looking.
the view of papal authority is not that much different than a jw's view of "the slave".. .

Watchtower Farms Cemetery gravestone photos - sad
by BonaFide infirst of all, if anyone is offended by the photos, then i will ask this topic to be removed.
i am posting the photos because i get sad sometimes about people being forgotten who tried so hard, even though they were wrong.
the cemetery is pretty easy to find, if you have any interest in finding it.

This is one of the Society's annual "don't partake" articles; it's a sure a sign of Spring as daffodils and tulips! (The annual recurring subject, usually in the KM, is the "don't misbehave at the district conventions!)

The Tobacco Bombshell...
by Snoozy inback in the 70's jw smokers where given 6 to 12 months to quit... i remember one witness in particular that had come up to missouri from arkansas to try and make a living for him and his wife and daughter.
(all jw"s).
well they had previously tried to earn a living in arkansas by picking cotton and doing other farm labors.

Whatever we think of smoking, and I'm definitely an opponent, I must say the earlier WT policy towards smokers was much more enlightened, 1.e.: treat the smoker as a spiritually weak person, provide counsel and support in helping him/her conquer the addtion; meanwhile disqualify him/her from parts on teh meeting or in any position that sets him/her up as an example. Whatever else he/she is, a smoker is not a WICKED preson and should not be treated as such. The cynic in me suspects that the WT leadership is far more concerned with the superficial appearance "look what a smoke-free, holy bunch of people we are; not one smoker at our conventiones!) than they are with a person's well-being.

Change in Regular Pioneer application process
by Ultimate Reality inthis week a letter is being read that changes the process for the approval of regular pioneers.
in times past you had to fill out an application, submit it to the elder body (who would then add their comments), and it would be forwarded to "the branch" for approval.. this is being changed so that the elder body grants the approval instead of brooklyn or the local branch.
it looks like the lawyers are removing any and all direct contact between the rank-and-file and the gb.

It's all in character... whether baptism vows, disfellowshipping procedures, corporate restructurings, child abuse issues, it's clear the legal department is running the organization

Jehovahs Witnesses - Mainstreaming, Like It Or Not
by metatron init used to be that pioneers supported themselves with free literature and magazines and put in 100+ hours a month.
then 90, then 70.. a publisher had to put in at least an hour a month to be counted.
now 15 minutes.. they used to hand out a written review and collect it and grade it!
-
Room 215
To add to Metratrons's list, I've noticed that comparatively few JWs know what a concordance is anymore or that there's no nee to reprint the Kingdom Interlinear version of the Greek Scriptuires... these used to be mainstream publications for them. Then too, at the WT study: if in theory, all are prepared and have studied, how many hands would one expect to go up in a congregation with real interest in the subject under consideration? one half? one quarter? Usually, the conductor has to wait and is lucky if he can elicit or two comments, and then they're usually rote answers, often reading directly from the magazine.. Clearly, the majority are coasting.
And then, consider how may use the Reasoning book as a crutch, rather than study to answer any and all challenges to their beliefs with only the Bible in hand; that was the rule 40-50 yearas ago? no longer. This book has reduced them to ventriloquist dummies; you gotta wonder just what their personal convictions are or whether they really know what they're supposed to believe.

I've often thought that the casual, offhand use of "Jehovah this" and "Jehovah that" actually cheapens the name, devalues it as common, borders on disrespect and detracts from the majesty owed to the Supreme Personage. It also smacks of incantantion.

Might the Watchtower Society be preparing accept EVOLUTION soon?
by slimboyfat ini heard a public talk last week that was all about evolution and how it dishonours god, and it struck me just how out of date and confused many of the ideas presented were.
the speaker used the old example of the giraffe's neck, but made the classic mistake of mixing up darwin's theory of natural selection and lamarckism by poking fun at the idea a neck stretched through use could be passed on to offspring.
i wondered how an otherwise intelligent person (as this speaker is) could make such an elementary mistake.. it occurs to me that the society has been writing less and less against evolution in recent years, so there is less up-to-date ammunition for brothers to draw upon in talks.

Old Charles Taze Russell allowed for the possibility of evolution, at least as far as the animals were concerned (Check "The New Creation", page 37)

Deadwood anyone?
by beksbks inmy gosh, i am two episodes into season two.
started at the beginning of season one.
it's fanfuckingtastic!

I know I'm a dissenter, but a lot of Deadwood's profanity and filth are gratuitous; apart from the profanity, I find the language stilted and contrived; I'm no expert, but I think "The Unforgiven" and "Lonesome Dove" more accurately capture the vernacular of the time.
